Bees and beekeeping are part of Slovenian natural and cultural heritage, dating back centuries. We even have an indigenous species called Carniolan honey bee, which is famed for its docility, hard work, humility and excellent sense of orientation.
But bees are greater than our local heritage. They are crucial in sustainable food production all over the world. Did you know that bees and other pollinators are responsible for one in every three bites of food we eat? With modern food production and dangerous pesticides, however, their very existence is threatened. We need to ensure their survival for the future generations.
Upon our initiative, May 20th has been officially endorsed as the "World Bee Day" by the UN General Assembly last December, with the aim of raising world-wide awareness about importance of bees for ensuring food security.
It is your pleasure to invite you to the Embassy in May to celebrate bees and their contribution to your healthy and sustainable living and also get to know the culture, culinary and natural wonders of Slovenia.
