Climate Change and Energy Sustainability: Lessons to be Learned from the COVID-19 Pandemic

Given the wide-spread, mandatory, stay-at-home orders in the face of growing economic disruption, we are presented with a perfect example of what must be held in the highest priority in a critical situation: protection of life. Does this moment give us an opportunity to see and experience what is to come with climate change, and if so, what are we to draw from the experience? Both crises affect human health in different but broadly connected ways. What can we learn from the current COVID-19 crisis that is applicable to the longer-term climate crisis? Can we expand our discussions on environmental human rights to include the fact that climate change affects all communities, albeit to a greater degree those who are already discriminated against? Should health and the environment be considered global public goods? How do we empower science and expertise in international public decision making?
