In this virtual workshop, Cypriot craftsman Mr. Giannakis Ioannou will be demonstrating the art of gourd engraving!
The engraving of the gourd is a folk craft developed in Cyprus over many years. Dried gourds have traditionally been used for a variety of household uses with the most widespread application being for water bottles and wine pitchers. The decoration on the gourd is made with a sharp knife or a fiery hot poker (pyrograph) and the decorative motifs can vary from geometric to floral motifs to animal images. Mr Ioannou has added his very own touch to this craft by engraving scenes from daily life and mythology, giving a new dimension to this beautiful form of art. Craftsman Ioannou will be using a pyrograph to demonstrate the activity - children who are watching and have a pyrograph are advised to do so under the guidance of an adult. If you do not have a pyrography you can also use a sharpie and a pumpkin to follow the instructions of our craftsman. Mr Giannakis Ioannou was an Elementary School teacher and principal in Cyprus, serving for more than 30 years. Mr. Ioannou is married and has two daughters. Following his retirement, the art of gourd engraving has served as one of hisprimary hobbies.
This event will be available from October 24 to November 29 on demand.
