The Netherlands Carillon: From the People of the Netherlands to the People of the United States of America
The Embassy of the Netherlands is launching an online exhibition highlighting a unique monument: the Netherlands Carillon. The Dutch people gave this 127-foot-tall bell tower, that overlooks the National Mall across the Potomac River, to the people of the United States in the 1950s as a gesture of gratitude for America’s contribution to the liberation of the Netherlands and for the Marshall Plan aid that helped rebuild the European economy. The carillon symbolizes gratitude and friendship.
