Trombonist Janning Trumann is a researcher. With his diverse projects he is always looking for a clear musical idea and language. Mr. Trumann and his Quartet are searching for the very unique idea, the CERN of their own music.

To leave space, to let the music speak and to differ are their principles. The steady change of nearness and distance is closely connected to improvised and composed music. The unique sound of the Quartet is influenced by its members’ taste for letting the unknown be part of the now.

The four musicians are well known in the German and Cologne jazz world. They play in various ensembles and represent the young scene of contemporary jazz.

Biography

Born in 1990 in Uelzen, Germany, Mr. Trumann studied jazz trombone at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne and at New York University.

As a musician and composer he is active throughout Germany. In Cologne he organizes and curates his own concert series. His current focus is on the work with his own Quartet.

Mr. Trumann is always looking for the individual way of expressing and creating new forms and improvisation within a musical structure. His sound ideal on trombone is light and flexible, able to speak with a clear voice. He is the 2016 recipient of the international J.J. Johnson Trombone Competition of ITA and the prestigious North Rhine-Westphalia Award for Young Artists.

He has collaborated with renowned musicians and ensembles like the WDR Big Band, Peter Herbolzheimer, Dave Douglas, Donny Mc Caslin, Niels Klein, Vince Mendosa, Pablo Held, Marshall Gilkes and many others. Concert tours have taken him to the USA, Canada, Russia, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland and Estonia.
