It is a story about love, but above all, a coming-of-age story which fishes out memories from a Naples experienced as a child. La Kryptonite nella Borsa (Kriptonite!) is, in fact, set in 1973, when Naples was certainly not rich, but was experiencing a wind of change in social and sexual customs. Peppino (Luigi Catani) is 9 years old, wears big glasses, and when he plays football his friends make him act as goalpost. His mother Rosaria (Valeria Golino) and his dad Antonio (Luca Zingaretti) love him dearly. Unfortunately, his dad cheats on his mom with the girl that works in his shop in Portici. When his mom finds out about the affair, Peppino is sent to live with his gradparents and a young uncle and aunt, Salvatore and Titina (Libero De Rienzo and Cristiana Capotondi). The young aunt and uncle expose him to an unimaginable world of freedom and music, and his cousin Gennaro, who thinks he’s superman (hence the title), who tragically dies. Peppino’s imagination continues to see and to talk to his friend with superpowers, who tells him all about the beauty of being different and unique.
