This unique SPGH event, co-sponsored by Georgetown University’s Modern Greek Studies Program, showcases, in the form of a live concert, the living tradition of two millennia of Greek music in the songs of Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadjidakis.
The songs will be performed by the Greek Music Ensemble, a Boston-based group committed to the critical interpretation and high-quality performance of contemporary Greek music, under the direction of Panagiotis Liaropoulos of the Berklee College of Music
Drawing on Byzantine hymns, demotic songs, and rembetika, and marrying this musical heritage with that of the great heritage of Greek poetry, Theodorakis and Hadjidakis created the genre of “Greek Art Popular Song” that sang the trials, but also hopes, aspirations and sensibilities of the Greek people during the Second World War.
Free admission, registration required.
