Transatlantic relations are a top priority for the Portuguese Presidency of the EU Council. On both sides of the Atlantic, there is a renewed commitment to the transatlantic relation in addressing the global challenges we are faced with. Last December, the European Union approved “A new EU-US agenda for global change”, with clear proposals for strengthened cooperation on a number of areas such as the pandemic, climate change, multilateralism, trade, technology, security and defense, among others. At the same time, the Biden administration has been making clear its steadfast determination to work closely with the European Union and European countries, both bilaterally and in the international arena.
However, for closer cooperation to be effective, it has to bear in mind internal factors specific to the European Union and the United States of America. It also has to take into account an evolving international geostrategic environment. India, the largest democracy in the world, is a crucial actor within this framework. Under the current Portuguese Presidency of the Council, the European Union will hold a Summit with India on May 8.
This webinar will try and identify the main challenges and opportunities ahead of us, as well as the elements affecting the construction of a transatlantic response.
Musical Moment – 12:00 pm EDT
The webinar will be followed by a concert by Portuguese Guitar player Marta Pereira da Costa. The Portuguese Guitar is very closely associated with Fado, the soulful music from Portugal acknowledged by UNESCO as part of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. While upholding the roots and traditions of Fado, Marta risked new sounds and sought to give voice to her instrument through the world of Jazz, World Music and Portuguese Music.
She will be accompanied by António Pinto on the acoustic guitar, Gonçalo Leonardo on the double bass, André Sousa Machado on percussion, and Alexandre Diniz on the piano and accordion.
Marta is the first and only female professional Fado guitarist worldwide.
When: Friday, March 26 – 11:00 am EDT.
